Hockey Hall-of-Famer adds to corporate resume

The New York Islanders announced today that Mike Bossy has been named the Vice President of Corporate Sponsorship & Partnership Marketing. Nearly three decades removed from his last on-ice hat trick, Bossy’s promotion is the third leg of a career that already saw him transition from Stanley Cup Champion to sales champion. In his new role, Bossy and his staff will nurture the organization’s bonds with current sponsors, develop new partnerships and direct the associated marketing.

“The Islanders have always been my passion, from my years as a player to my post-playing days in a suit and tie,” Bossy said. “It’s gratifying to work with my existing clients, and I love the pursuit of new and exciting partnerships. I embrace the challenge of bringing the organization and our stakeholders to new heights.”

Since Bossy re-joined the Islanders in 2006, he has had a quick rise in the rank-and-file of the corporate world, credited to his notoriety as a player and proficiency as a businessman. Both qualities have contributed to growing the organization’s crop of sponsors and strengthening the team’s fan relations.

Bossy was drafted in 1977 by the Islanders and became one of the most prolific and decorated forwards in the history of the National Hockey League. He was a key component of the Islanders dynasty that secured four consecutive Stanley Cups championships from 1980-83. Over a ten-year playing career his efforts earned him an NHL-record nine consecutive 50-goal seasons and accolades such as the 1982 Conn Smythe Trophy for Playoff MVP. He officially retired from the sport in 1988 after tallying 1,100 points and becoming one of only five players to reach the 50-goal plateau in 50 games. He was inducted to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Islanders raised his number 22 jersey to the rafters in 1992.

Bossy’s success immediately translated off the ice following his hockey career. He began working in marketing for a Canadian food company, eventually becoming their Quebec division’s Director of Sales.

“Mike has successfully adjusted from his life as a player and the accomplishments he earned to become a business leader,” Senior Vice President of Sales Paul Lancey said. “His rise will continue to strengthen the New York Islanders’ position in the corporate arena. Mike’s experience both during his hockey career and before his return to the club’s front office is an asset to the organization and will continue doing great things for the team he loves for years to come."
