Moulson named finalist for Lady Byng Trophy

The National Hockey League announced today that New York Islanders forward Matt Moulson has been named a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, awarded annually to the player “adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.”

This is the second-straight season that Moulson has been named a finalist for the trophy. The announcement of the winner will take place during the 2013 Stanley Cup Finals. Further details on the date and format will become available at a later date.

Moulson, 29, scored 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists) in 47 games this season, while recording only four penalty minutes. The fourth-year Islander tied for 21st in the league in points, while posting fewer penalty minutes than every other player who ranked amongst the NHL’s top-30 scorers.

A native of North York, ON, Moulson led the Islanders in assists, finished second on the club in points (44) and third in goals (15). He made his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut this season, recording three points (two goals, one assist) in six games.

The three-time 30-goal scorer’s season also featured 13 multi-point games, including a season-high four-point effort (1g/3a) on Feb. 16 vs. New Jersey. Moulson scored the 100th goal of his Islanders career against the Winnipeg Jets on January 27 at MTS Centre and his 200th NHL point on February 23 against the Buffalo Sabres at First Niagara Center.

After appearing in 284-straight games, Moulson missed the first contest of his Islanders career this season due to illness; his games-played streak stands as the third longest in Islanders history (Billy Harris - 576, Bob Nystrom - 301).

In 322 career NHL games with the Islanders and the Los Angeles Kings, Moulson has scored 224 points (118 goals, 106 assists). Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the ninth round, 263rd overall, of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Moulson signed with the Islanders as a free agent prior to the 2009-10 season.

Chicago Blackhawks right wing Patrick Kane and Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Martin St. Louis are also finalists for the award.
