Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Kerby Rychel and Max Domi

In the days leading up to the 2013 Draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down the top prospects in North America and Europe

Thursday, 06.06.2013 / 12:00 AM / 2013 Islanders Draft Central
By Greg Picker
The son of former NHLer Warren Rychel, Kerby Rychel plays a much different brand of hockey. While Warren was considered an enforcer tallying 1,422 PIM in 406 career games, Kerby is more prone to putting the puck in the back of the net. Leading his team with 87 points in 68 games, (40 goals, 47 assists) Rychel was one of the few bright spots on a Windsor squad that failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

Kerby Rychel is a fierce competitor every night and is not at all afraid to play the game in the dirty areas.  He’s more of a goal scorer than a playmaker, and he’s also not afraid to drop the mitts when necessary. Rychel is a team player with some intangibles many others don’t possess.
Another son of a former NHL tough guy, Max Domi is more apt at using his stick to score than his fists to fight. His father Tie racked up 3515 PIMs during his NHL career. Max led the Knights with 32 points (11g, 21a) in 21 playoff games as the Knights won their second consecutive OHL Championship. He also finished first on the team in scoring during the regular season.

When you think of Max don’t go looking for comparisons with his dad, Tie Domi. Albeit stature, competitiveness and passion are close to the same, Max generates a lot more offense due to his skill level. One has to look no further than his Memorial Cup assist on Bo Horvat’s goal to see where his skill level is.
John Tavares, Islanders center

Drafted: 2009, NY Islanders (1st round, 1st overall)

"My year there was a lot of speculation between me, (Matt) Duchene and (Victor) Hedman. I felt that I put myself in the best situation possible to prove to every team that I was worthy of being selected first. I worked hard all season, but I was really just excited to get my opportunity. Obviously, being selected No. 1 is a very special thing, so I was lucky."

Each day of the week leading up to the draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down prospects from different leagues.
