Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Valentin Zykov and Frederik Gauthier
In the days leading up to the 2013 Draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down the top prospects in North America and Europe
It didn’t take long for Valentin Zykov to adjust during his first season in North America. With 75 points (40 goals, 35 assists) in 67 games, Zykov finished second on his team in scoring. He also earned the Canadian Hockey League (QMJHL, OHL, WHL) Rookie of the Year Award. The previous nine winners have all been selected in the first round of the NHL Draft.

Valentin Zykov is a power forward-type player. He protects the puck well and uses his size and strength to his advantage. Zykov won't dazzle anyone with 1-on-1 skill, but can play the game well in the trenches. He has a good hard shot, quick release and likes to score.

Frederik Gauthier established himself on the QMJHL stage with a solid performance during his QMJHL rookie season. Gauthier finished fourth among first-year players with 60 points (22 goals, 38 assists) in 68 games. He also earned a gold medal while chipping in offensively for Team Canada at the U-18 World Junior Championship in Sochi, Russia with four points (one goal, three assists) in seven games.

Frederick Gauthier is a big, left handed center. He has good skill, and plays the game with a great deal of precision. He doesn't get ahead of the play, supports the puck well all over the ice and is diligent in his thought process. Gauthier has the ability to be both an offensive weapon and/or a responsible two-way player.
Casey Cizikas, Islanders forward

Drafted: 2009, NY Islanders (4th round, 92nd overall)

“I was actually at driving school when I found out I was drafted. I got the call from my agent while I was taking the written test and that’s how I found out…let’s just say I didn’t finish the written test that day.”

Each day of the week leading up to the draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down prospects from different leagues.
