Islanders 2013 Draft Central - Seth Jones and Hunter Shinkaruk
In the days leading up to the 2013 Draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down the top prospects in North America and Europe
In his first WHL season, Seth Jones took the league by storm tallying 56 points (14 goals, 42 assists) in 61 games. He helped Portland win the WHL title and also earned a gold medal as the youngest member of Team USA at the World Junior Championship.

BJ MacDonald, NHL Central Scouting
“Seth is a big, rangy defenseman who has a nice command of his shifts. He has the ability to be a game-changer because he has good instincts and awareness. He’s an underrated passer, possesses solid one-on-one play and can skate the puck out of danger at any time. He’s already the complete package, but I get the feeling he still has another gear to go to.”

Hunter Shinkaruk just finished his third WHL season and tallied well over a point-per-game for the second consecutive time. With 86 points (37 goals, 49 assists) in 64 games, the Medicine Hat captain was second on the club in scoring. In the postseason, he notched six points (three goals, three assists) in eight games.

“As soon as he touches the puck, people in the stands want to stand up and say, 'Here he goes.' This kid is really exciting to watch. As soon as he touches the puck you go, ‘Wow, this is great."

Doug Weight, Islanders Assistant Coach and Sr. Advisor to the General Manager

Drafted: 1990: NY Rangers (2nd round, 34th overall)

"I had a camp in St. Cloud, Minnesota, obviously prior to cell phones. I was ranked 13th and I sat in a bar with all the guys watching and waited and waited. Unfortunately I didn't go in the first round and I headed to practice. After practice I found out when I called my father and he told me I went 34th to New York. The draft wasn't as big of a deal as it is now and it wasn't like you were coming back to your stall with 15 messages left on your phone."
Each day of the week leading up to the draft, newyorkislanders.com will break down prospects from different leagues.
