Islanders buy out DiPietro contract
Ranks second all-time in franchise games played by a goaltender with 318

The New York Islanders announced today that the team has used a compliance buyout on the contract of goaltender Rick DiPietro.

DiPietro, 31, played the entirety of his professional career within the New York Islanders organization. He appeared in a total of 318 career National Hockey League games, putting him second on the club’s all-time goaltender list behind Billy Smith, and finished with a career record of 130-136-8-28. DiPietro also played in 10 NHL playoff games, posting a record of 2-7.

Last season, DiPietro began the campaign with the Islanders before he was waived and subsequently loaned to the Islanders American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He played in 18 games for the Sound Tigers this past season and finished with a record of 9-9-0, a 2.93 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. DiPietro played other portions of his 12-year career with the Sound Tigers and finished with a 56-45-15 record over five seasons. In the Sound Tigers inaugural season, 2001-02, DiPietro helped the club capture the Eastern Conference Championship.

“It was an extremely tough decision to use the compliance buyout on Rick’s contract,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said. “His drive to win games and compete at the highest level for the New York Islanders was never questioned. With Rick back at 100% health, we wish him nothing but the best as he continues to pursue his career.”

DiPietro participated in the 2008 NHL All-Star Weekend in Atlanta, GA. Internationally, he represented the United States of America at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy. DiPietro also played in two World Championship Tournaments (2001 and 2005), the 2005 World Cup of Hockey and two World Junior Championship Tournaments (2000 and 2001).

The Winthrop, MA native was originally selected first overall by the Islanders at the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He became the first goalie selected first overall in an entry draft in league history.
