Rookies Take Part in Scrimmage

All 31 players were on the ice for a long practice Sunday, highlighted by the first game action of Islanders Rookie Camp. The players participated in drills from 10-11 a.m., then split up for a 40-minute scrimmage. The intrasquad game was broken down into three segments: A 20-minute 5-on-5, followed by 10 minutes of alternating 5-on-4s and finally 10 minutes of 4-on-4 play. Because of the high number of defensemen at camp, most of the blueliners rotated onto forward lines.

The blue team scored the only two goals of the morning, as goaltenders Parker Milner and Ken Reiter combined to shut the door against the orange team. Matt Donovan tipped in the first goal, directing a centering feed over Anders Nilsson’s shoulder. Toward the end of the session, Mike Keenan’s shot from the left side hit traffic on its way into the net, giving the blue side a two-goal cushion.

On playing up front
"I think all of us were pretty lost. It’s been a while since any of us have played forward. It’s fun every once in a while to mix it up a bit. The forwards get to see what we go through, and we get to see what they go through. It was good to get back in scrimmage shape too."

On getting ready for Islanders Training Camp
"It’s an honor to go to any NHL camp. It’s going to be a big test for all of us. I think we’re all competing for spots. The play is going to be at a high level."

Anders Lee
On his summer
"Summer has been real good. I spent a lot of time at school (Notre Dame), finishing up classes. I’ve still got a couple more credits to finish up, but I’ll take care of that next summer. I’ve been doing a lot of hard training there as well, getting ready for the upcoming season."

On the difference between offseason training for professional hockey vs. college hockey
"You come into camp here in early September, and you’re expected to be in shape and ready to play some games. In the college season, you have six weeks from September to figure out yourself and find your hands. It moves things up a little bit, but that makes it all the more exciting. I’m looking forward to it."

On the long practices so far during rookie camp
"You’re going to have two hour practices anywhere you are at the beginning of the year, so that’s nothing new. The intensity level is up there, and it’s something you’ve got to adjust to, but you work all summer to be ready for this."
