Amidst the excitement of John Tavares being appointed Islanders captain Monday, the club hosted its sixth annual Islanders Children’s Foundation Golf Outing. Held at Bethpage State Park’s Red Course, over 160 fans and sponsors participated in the event. Including the silent auction and raffle at the dinner portion of the event, over $100,000 was raised for children on Long Island.
Each group of four sponsors was matched with an Islanders player, coach or alumnus. On a beautiful afternoon, the Islanders enjoyed getting to know their fans over a round of golf.
Defenseman Travis Hamonic was partnered with a group from Ok Petroleum, located in West Babylon.
“It’s an opportunity for us to get to know the fans and for them to get to know us not just as jerseys on the ice,” said Hamonic. “Everyone coming together to support a great cause is really special.”
Forward Kyle Okposo was partnered with the Costello family, representing Costello Construction. Hailing from Maryland, the family has attended numerous Islanders games at Washington, but first visited Nassau Coliseum last spring for Game 4 of the Conference Quarterfinals against the Penguins.
“We were so amped up after the win that we said ‘we have to meet these guys,’” David Costello said. “So we decided to sponsor this event and had a terrific time. For us to help out a charity and combine that with the chance to play with an Islander is simply unbelievable.”
Like the rest of the team, Okposo has a deep appreciation for the Islanders Children’s Foundation.
“It’s something that (Owner) Charles Wang cares deeply about and we do as well,” Okposo said. “We’re happy to do anything we can to help.”
The day was full of competitions including “longest drive” and “hole-in-one” challenges that offered the chance to win a car. Other prizes included a trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony and an overnight trip to Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut.
“It’s been a great day and even more than we could have asked for,” said Ann Rina, Islanders Community Relations Manager. “I think everyone will go home happy and we’ll make next year’s event even bigger and better.”
The Islanders would like to thank the following sponsors: Met-rx, NBTY Helping Hands, Merrill Lynch, US Trust/Bank of America, Package All Corp, MSG, Feury Image Group, Silver Fin Capital Group, Capital One Bank, Blackberry, LMS Entertainment, AXA Advisors, Kenneth Peters Center, Newsday, HSBC, Petrozella Agency, Inc., Costello Construction, NYCB, Pepsi, Globecomm, Mercedes Benz, Printing Spectrum, Advanced Restoration, Astoria Federal, Ok Petroleum, C.N.A.
