Game Day Updates 10\/5\/13
Islanders-Blue Jackets Game day updates
The New York Islanders and Columbus Blue Jackets will play tonight at Nassau Coliseum in the second game of both clubs' seasons. The Isles will hit the ice at 10:00 for an optional skate.

9:50: Curious to see how big the contingent skating for the Islanders is. Late night in Newark last night with the shootout, and this is a quick turnaround.

10:07: Some shots from early in practice:

Brian Strait fires a shot on Kevin Poulin.

Eric Boulton follows in the order.

Thomas Hickey getting ready for his turn.

10:12: Not on the ice is Evgeni Nabokov, who was busy last night. Kevin Poulin is taking all the reps today.

11:05: Islanders just finished media availability. Jack Capuano says that he's putting out the same lineup as last night, including having Nabokov start in goal.

11:11: Capuano, on the top line not producing last night: "Players can learn from what other guys do during the course of a hockey game, and those lines were having success because they were playing the right way, they were chipping pucks and weren't turning pucks over. The top line's shift times were over a minute, and you can't play hockey and have success like that. You need to be in that 35-45 second range."

11:24: Michael Grabner, on last night's win at New Jersey: "It's good to get that first win out of the way, and the first road win too, so now we can focus on our home opener. Obviously we have some stuff we can still adjust and be better at, but overall I think everyone will take the first win."

11:30: Grabner, on the chemistry with Frans Nielsen: "I've been playing with Frans on and off for the last three or four years. I know where he is and he knows where I will be. It's nice to go out there and do our thing."

11:34: Frans Nielsen, on the importance on secondary scoring: "We know that Johnny's line can't take us to the playoffs alone, so we've got to help out and it's nice that we can do what we did last night."

11:36: Nielsen, on the importance of starting off the season on a high note: "We got the win. We didn't play our best game, but everybody worked hard and for each other. We didn't get outworked. It wasn't pretty all the time, but it was a nice team effort."

11:38: Columbus has the ice right now, and we'll have some photos and quotes from their side shortly.

11:45: The Blue Jackets are on Nassau Coliseum ice for the first time since Nov. 24, 2010.

12:15: Blue Jackets left wing Nick Foligno, on the improvements Columbus needs tonight, after dropping their season opener last night against Calgary: "We felt like we let Calgary hang around last game, and it came back to hurt us. It's finding that extra gear, making sure we're playing within our system and understanding the type of hockey we need to play to win, and that's a grinding style of game. Not the run and gun style of game that we got into last night. Eventually, it cost us."

12:18: Foligno, on putting last night's loss behind them: "We understand what we did wrong last game. It's nothing too crazy. It's something we can fix and I think we're excited about the opportunity we have here tonight against a real good team, and hopefully we can get off to a good start."

12:21: Columbus head coach Todd Richards, on playing a fast Islanders team: "It'll be a challenge tonight. These guys have some momentum based off what they were able to accomplish last year. I'm sure they were disappointed by the way the season ended, but there's a lot of momentum there. They are coming off of a win last night, and it's their home opener. So there's a lot of reasons they'll be moving pretty good out on the ice tonight."

12:24: Richards, on what his team can build off of from last night: "It wasn't too much as far as combinations, where I thought, 'We've got to keep these guys together and give them an opportunity.' We're going to sit down as a coaching staff and map out what we want to do. As of this moment, I'm still undecided as far as line combinations for tonight's game."

Check back this evening, as Newyorkislanders.com will have live updates of the home opener. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m.
