Pregame
Colin McDonald is scratched for the first time this season, as he's day-to-day with a hip injury. Eric Boulton will make his season debut, while Cal Clutterbuck will play his first game in an Islander uniform at Nassau Coliseum. Matt Carkner is back in the lineup after making his season debut Saturday at Nashville.

1st Period

3:31: Islanders kill off an early power play, allowing a couple of shots, to keep the game scoreless. Now Buffalo's Mike Weber will go to the box for interference.

5:46: Isles got four shots on that man advantage, but nothing behind Ryan Miller. Now they take a too many men on the ice penalty (served by John Tavares) to go back to the PK.

7:50: Islanders kill off the penalty without too much trouble. Michael Grabner with two chances to score at the tail end of it, but we're still scoreless. Shots: NYI 7 BUF 5.

13:11: Frans Nielsen gets the Islanders on the board with his third tally of the seaosn. Another goal born from a nice breakout. Nielsen received a pass from Josh Bailey in the neutral zone, took the blue line and wristed a shot high glove on Ryan Miller. 1-0 Islanders. Pierre-Marc Bouchard gets the secondary assist - his first point as an Islander.

18:46: Zemgus Girgensons gets hit with a shot in front of Evgeni Nabokov and skates off with a towel on his face. Crew is out cleaning blood off the ice.

End 1st: NYI 1 BUF 0. Shots: NYI 16 BUF 11.

2nd Period
5:24: A really unlucky hop winds up in the back of the Islanders net and it's 1-1. A harmless looking feed from up high got deflected and it somehow went through Nabokov's legs. Tyler Ennis tapped in the puck, which was behind the Islanders netminder. Drew Stafford and Christian Ehrhoff with the assists.

8:08: Matt Martin's first of the season makes it 2-1 Islanders. Casey Cizikas got denied on a great chance in front, and took the rebound from behind the goal line to find Martin on the doorstep. Martin one-timed it to the side of Miller. Eric Boulton with the second helper.

9:20: Quick puck movement by the Sabres ties the game up at 2-2 on the power play. Thomas Vanek took a feed in front from Cody Hodgson, who was stationed near the left wing boards. Ehrhoff with another assist.

16:13: Boulton and Cody McCormick square off near center ice. The fight didn't last long, as both players lost balance early.

16:50: John Scott, who started being a pest before the faceoff a minute ago even happened, and Matt Carkner, who doesn't tolerate that kind of thing, both just got called for unsportsmanlike conduct after a testy shift. The teams will skate 4-on-4.

End 2nd: NYI 2 BUF 2. Shots: NYI 32 BUF 24.

3rd Period
5:20: Kyle Okposo is penalized for boarding, and 10,512 in the building don't agree with the call.

7:37: Steve Ott and John Tavares get into it in the Sabres zone. Lots of face-washing before the cavalry arrives and we almost had a line brawl. Okposo will go back to the box, as will Ott, who lost his jersey in the process.

Ott's getting the extra penalty, so it'll result in an Islanders power play.

8:44: Tavares makes them pay. Slap shot from the right side banked in off a Sabres defenseman banked in off Matt Moulson's leg to make it 3-2.

9:21: Another New York power play. Henrik Tallinder whistled for a hit away from the puck on Cal Clutterbuck.

17:59: A deflection winds up in the back of the Islanders net. Marcus Foligno's shot from the right point hit a stick in front and went over Nabokov. Game is tied at 3-3.

End 3rd: NYI 3 BUF 3. Shots: NYI 42 BUF 32. Overtime for the third time in six Islanders games this season.

Overtime
4:15: Nabokov covers up on a scramble in front to keep the game going. Both goaltenders have made one big one in overtime.

4:34: Okposo with a chance from the slot on a turnover, but Miller is equal to the task.

End overtime: NYI 3 BUF 3. Shots: NYI 44 BUF 34. Headed to the shootout. Recap to come later.
