The New York Islanders defeated the Phoenix Coyotes 6-1 in the first game of their 2013-14 season series at Nassau Coliseum. John Tavares had two goals, while Josh Bailey (1g/2a), Frans Nielsen (3a) and Michael Grabner (3a) each had three points in the rout. Colin McDonald and Matt Donovan scored their first goals of the season and Peter Regin netted his first goal as an Islander. Evgeni Nabokov stopped 33-of-34 shots in the win.

Coyotes player to watch
Oliver Ekman-Larsson - Defenseman

Oliver Ekman-Larsson is blossoming into a top-offensive defenseman out in the Arizona desert. Ekman-Larsson has 20 points (4g/16a) in 30 games this season, which rank him ninth in defensive scoring. The sixth overall pick in the 2009 draft plays over 25 minutes a game (also ninth among defensemen), more minutes than Zdeno Chara, Duncan Keith and P.K. Subban. Ekman-Larsson is tied for fifth in team scoring and has the second highest plus/minus (+10) on the Yotes. 
 
Islanders Storylines
Top Line: John Tavares (1g/3a), Thomas Vanek (2g/1a) and Kyle Okposo (1g/1a) have combined for nine points in the Islanders last two games.
Doan Sidelined: Coyotes captain, and second-leading scorer, Shane Doan has missed two straight games and will not play against the Islanders.
End of the Road: The Islanders wrap up a five-game Western swing Thursday in Phoenix. The Coyotes are 9-2-2 at home this season.
Rally: The Islanders rallied from a 2-0 third-period deficit to beat the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
Strome Recalled: Ryan Strome was recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday.
