The Islanders lost their first two meetings with the Capitals this season, but took a point in a 3-2 overtime loss on Nov. 30. In that outing, the Islanders grabbed a 2-1 lead with 1:51 to play, but allowed the Caps to tie the game on a late shorthanded goal. Alex Ovechkin scored the OT winner to complete the comeback for the Caps.

Nick Backstrom is one of the NHL’s top playmakers and his 42 assists are fourth in the league. Backstrom also has 11 goals for a total of 56 points and has one goal and three assists in two games against the Islanders this season.

Quote of the Day:
Head coach Jack Capuano on Travis Hamonic:
Hamonic going through the protocol where he is getting some contact and skating with the club... We don’t want to put a guy in a situation where he’s not ready, but he said he’s feeling pretty good to skate with us and that’s a positive sign.
