Islanders Acquire Sebastian Collberg
The Islanders acquired Swedish prospect Sebastian Collberg from Montreal at Wednesday\'s trade deadline.

The New York Islanders acquired Montreal Canadiens prospect Sebastian Collberg prior to Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline. In addition to the Swedish prospect, the Islanders received a conditional second round pick in the 2014 Draft from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Thomas Vanek.

“Collberg has the potential to be a top-six forward,” Islanders General Manager Garth Snow said in a conference call following the deal. “As a staff we are excited to have Sebastian in our mix and obviously with the potential to have a second-round pick – if Montreal makes the playoffs – it was a good day in that regard, under trying circumstances with where our team is in the standings.”

Collberg, 20, was selected in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft by the Canadiens. He is currently in his third season playing for Frolunda of the Swedish Hockey League, where he has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 40 games.

Scouts say Collberg possesses a hard, accurate wrist shot with a quick release, in addition to good speed and acceleration. He has shone on the international stage, scoring 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 19 games over three World Junior Championships. Collberg medaled at all three WJC tournaments he's played, winning gold in 2011-12, and silver in both 2012-13 and 2013-14.

“Sebastian Collberg is a pretty highly-rated prospect,” Snow said. “[At 33rd overall] he was pretty close to being a first-round pick in 2012.”

Montreal's second-round pick in the 2014 draft becomes the Islanders' provided the Canadiens qualify for the Stanley Cup playoffs in April.
