Morning Skate Updates 3\/25\/14
News, notes and quotes from the Islanders morning skate at PNC Arena.

Fresh off Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Islanders kick off a two-game Southern road trip in Raleigh tonight.

The Islanders are looking to avoid the season sweep against the Hurricanes, having gone 0-3-0 this season against the Canes. The three loses came at the hands of three different goalies – Cam Ward, Anton Khudobin and Justin Peters – and the Islanders will get the chance to avenge the loss to Ward tonight.

Ahead of tonight’s game, the Islanders held an optional morning skate at PNC Arena in Raleigh. Here is some news, notes and quotes from today’s skate.

Lineup Notes/Changes:

Okposo: Kyle Okposo took a maintenance day on Monday, but will play for the Islanders tonight in Tuesday.

Nilsson Starts: Anders Nilsson is back in goal for the Islanders.

Boulton Signs: Eric Boulton signed a one-year deal with the Islanders on Sunday.

Capuano on Boulton’s Signing: The thing I really like about Boulton is that he comes to the rink every day and wants to get better. We talk about that as an individual, he brings that physical presence that you need and he’s a total team guy. He might not be in the lineup night after night, but he understands his role and that’s what you look for in a guy like Eric Boulton.

Capuano on Calvin de Haan, accountability: We talk about accountability all the time. As coaches you have to hold your players accountable. On successful teams, you have great leadership and players who hold themselves accountable. Having guys around like that is an essential part of your success and de Haan brings it every day.

I love de Haan's grit, determination and the fact that he comes to the rink and wants to get better every day. He’s focused, a good leader for us and doesn’t like to lose. That’s what you like, a guy that wants to compete, wants to win. For me that is what it’s all about – having that room with guys like him that understand what it takes to win. He puts pressure on other guys and that’s what you want.

Matt Carkner on being the veteran on the blueline: Church (Kevin Czuczman) over here says he used to watch me when I was with the Ottawa Senators, so that really aged me.
