Islanders & TD Bank Honor Life-Saving NYPD Officers

The Islanders and TD Bank honored two NYPD police officers and former Long Island residents as the March Hometown Heroes for saving the life of a 15-month-old child last month. Officer Michael Konatsotis and his partner Officer David Roussine of the NYPD’s 30th precinct were presented with the honor at the March 29 game against the New Jersey Devils.

Officers Konatsotis and Roussine were patrolling Manhattan’s Upper East Side when they received a distress call about the toddler who had difficulty breathing. Within 45 seconds, the family had flagged the two officers. Officer Konatsotis, who was a volunteer EMT in Queens in his early years, took the baby from the father and immediately started performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation as Officer Roussine drove everyone to Weill-Cornell Medical Center, alerting the hospital staff of their arrival.

After three attempts at mouth to mouth during the six block drive to the hospital, which Officer Roussine made in roughly 80 seconds, the baby began breathing just before arriving at the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

"That baby took a little belch there, and I said, 'My God, that beautiful little bundle of joy she's OK," Konatsotis said recalling the event.

“The Hometown Hero program gives us the opportunity to recognize people in the community for the heroic work that they do,” VP of Suburban New York Marketing at TD Bank said. “That’s why we initiated this program with the Islanders. They are our hometown heroes, regular people doing really great things and tonight is the definition of that.”
