Griffin Reinhart advances to the WHL Final, Stockton advances to the second round.

Reinhart, Oil Kings Advance to WHL Championship

Griffin Reinhart and the Edmonton Oil Kings won their third straight WHL Eastern Conference Championship Saturday night, as they defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers in five games.

Reinhart scored four points (two goals, two assists) in the series. The Oil Kings get set to face the Portland Winterhawks for the Ed Chynoweth Cup – the Western League’s championship – for the third straight season.

These WHL powerhouses are looking to break a 1-1 deadlock in their championship trilogy and earn a berth in the 2014 Mastercard Memorial Cup.

Edmonton dominated the WHL’s Eastern Conference, winning 12-of-14 games – including a first-round sweep – en route to the finals. Portland followed suit, winning 12-of-14 in the same fashion.

The Oil Kings concede home-ice advantage for the first time this postseason, as the Winterhawks finished with 113 points in the regular season, 10 more than the Eastern champs.

Otters Eliminated

Adam Pelech and the Erie Otters were eliminated from the OHL playoffs Friday night, as they fell to the Guelph Storm in five games. After bulldozing their way to the OHL’s Western Conference Finals, the Otters ran into an equally-hot Storm team, looking to defend the Wayne Gretzky trophy as the West’s top team. While game one was a close 5-4 loss, the Otters let games two, three and five slip away, losing by a combined score of 19-3. Erie made some noise in game four, beating Guelph 5-2 on home ice. Pelech posted three assists in the five-game series and finished the playoffs with seven points (two goals, five assists).

Stockton Advances to Second Round:

The Stockton Thunder advanced to the second round of the ECHL playoffs after sweeping their California-rivals, the Ontario Reign, in four games. The seventh-seeded Thunder played the first two games at home, due to a scheduling conflict at Ontario’s arena, but took advantage of the opportunity rolling into Ontario and taking game three 5-2 and the series clincher 2-1. Nicholas Tremblay scored the series-winner in game four, while Joey Martin’s hat-trick powered the Thunder to the game-three victory. Goaltender Brian Foster improved to 4-0 in the playoffs with a 1.75 goals-against average.
