Islanders Select Five on Day Two

The New York Islanders selected five players on Day Two of the National Hockey League Draft in Philadelphia. The club’s picks in rounds three through seven included goaltenders Ilya Sorokin and Linus Soderstrom, defenseman Devon Toews, forwards Kyle Schempp and Lukas Sutter.

The Islanders opened the second day with six picks, but traded the 65th overall selection to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Florida’s third-round pick in 2015. With their next two selections, the Islanders chose a pair of 18-year-old European goaltenders in Sorokin and Soderstrom.

Sorokin, the Islanders’ third-round (78th overall) pick, played 27 games in goal for Novokuznetsk Metallurg of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2013-14. The 6’2, 167-pound goaltender posted a 2.90 goals-against average and a 0.911 save percentage in Russia’s top league.

Soderstrom, selected with the fifth pick of the fourth round (95th overall), appeared in 23 games with Djurgarden’s under-20 club in Sweden’s SuperElit league this past season. A 6’4, 187-pound netminder, Soderstrom posted a 2.61 goals-against average and 0.915 save percentage. The Stockholm native was Sweden’s starting goaltender at both the 2014 Under-18 World Junior Championships and the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

The Islanders’ third and fourth picks on Day Two were a pair of 20-year-old college hockey players in Toews and Schempp.

Toews, chosen in the fourth round (108th overall), scored 17 points (one goal, 16 assists) in 37 games last season as a freshman at Quinnipiac University. A 5’11, 175-pound defenseman, Toewes spent the previous two seasons with the Surrey Eagles of the British Columbia Hockey League (Junior A). The Aldergrove, BC, native led Surrey to the BCHL Championship in 2012-13 and was named the BCHL’s Best Defenseman, earning a spot on the league’s First All-Star Team.

Schempp, the Islanders’ sixth round selection (155th overall), scored 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists) in 43 games as a freshman at Ferris State University this past season. Prior to his collegiate career, the 6’0, 178-pound center played for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League and the Traverse City North Stars of the North American Hockey League. Schempp was born in Saginaw, Michigan.

In the seventh round, the Islanders traded the 185th overall pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for the 200th overall pick and Tampa Bay’s seventh round selection in 2015.

The Islanders’ final pick of the 2014 draft, Sutter, came in the seventh round, 200th overall. A forward from St. Louis, MI, Sutter scored 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) with the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League this past season. Sutter’s father, Rich, played 874 NHL games with seven teams over his 17-year career.
