Modano seals the victory with an early overtime tally after Islanders tie it late

The Islanders scored a late power play goal to steal a point, but the Dallas Stars stole the final point, scoring 35 seconds into overtime for a 3-2 win Monday night at the Nassau Coliseum.

Stephane Robidas drove to the right wing side and threw the puck on goal. Mike Modano crashed the net and chipped the puck past Rick DiPietro 35 seconds into overtime. The Islanders had tied the game at two on a power play goal with only 2:38 left in the third period. Marc-Andre Bergeron's blast from the point was stopped by Marty Turco, but Miroslav Satan buried the rebound to send the game into overtime.

"It was one of those games where maybe we shouldn't have gotten a point," said head coach Ted Nolan. "We found a way to get a point and it all equals out in the end."

Turco made 23 saves for the win, while DiPietro stopped 28 shots. Dallas has won consecutive games against New York teams, while the Islanders put up their first overtime loss of the season.

"If the chances aren't there then maybe there should be frustration," said Nolan, "but as long as you have the opportunities, eventually they'll go in."

At 9:07 of the second period, Richard Park struck for the second time in two games for a 1-0 Islanders lead. Radek Martinek chipped the puck into the Stars' offensive zone and Park raced in shorthanded. Park grabbed the puck skated around the on-coming Turco and flipped a backhand into the empty-net for his first shorthanded goal of the season.

"It was pretty tight in the neutral zone," admitted Satan. "We don't get to see them too often and we don't really know what to expect."

Modano tied the game at one with 8:23 left in the second period on a wrist shot from the slot. Jeff Halpern scored from the side of the goal off of a nice feed from Sergei Zubov, at 6:07 of the third period to give Dallas a 2-1 advantage.

Later in the third period, the Islanders desperately climbed back into the game on their late power play goal - their first in 17 man-advantage opportunities.

"Considering the team we're playing, it was nice to get that power play goal and keep them from scoring on the power play," said Nolan regaridng  the Stars' five power plays. "That was the big difference and one of the reasons why we got the point."

The Islanders finish their three-game homestand on Wednesday against Ottawa.

Stat of the Game: The Islanders scored only special teams goals.

Isles Turning Point of the Game: The Isles tied the game at two when Stars defenseman Matt Niskanen took a holding penalty. Coach Ted Nolan put out his top power play unit and they did not disappoint. It looked like the coaching staff wanted the Isles to shoot the puck more while on the power play.

Right off the faceoff, defenseman Bryan Berard took a slap shot from the blue line but that was blocked by Stars center Jeff Halpern. But instead of leaving the zone, the puck went right to the stick of Isles defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron. Bergeron faked a shot that drew one Stars player to ground, then let loose a cannon which Stars goaltender Marty Turco was able to get a piece. Isles center Mike Comrie had his stick lifted by a Stars defender allowing Miroslav Satan to roof the puck past Turco to tie the game at 2.


Kickbutt Fan of the Game: John from Levittown has been going to Islanders game since he was a little kid. Beaker has been accompanying John to games for the past two seasons. Beaker has also traveled with John to Islanders games in New Jersey and Boston.
Slapshots: This was the first loss to Dallas at home since December 21, 2000…Richard Park scored the Islanders' third shorthanded goal of the season…The Islanders scored their first power play goal in four games.
