UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) -- The New York Islanders showed commitment for 60 minutes and were rewarded with a win.

Jason Blake's power-play goal with five minutes left and Garth Snow's 34 saves spurred the Islanders to a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night.

"We found a way," Blake said. "We just kept fighting, and this team has been coming together for 60 minutes."

Blake, on New York's only power play, fired a slap shot from the top of the left circle that beat a screened Jeff Hackett to the far side.

Arron Asham scored twice, and Dave Scatchard added a goal for the Islanders, who have won five straight at home.

The Flyers got goals from Michal Handzus and Mark Recchi and 26 saves from Hackett. Philadelphia has won just twice in nine games (2-3-2-2).

"We made a couple of mistakes we've been making for a little while, and we have to stop making," Recchi said. "It takes a big commitment to win, and we're not getting it right now."

After a scoreless, penalty-free opening period, Scatchard opened the scoring with a goal at 3:54 of the second that held up under a video review. Scatchard followed Blake's shot with a backhand attempt that pinballed off both his skates and just made it over the goal line.

It marked the 14th straight game that the Flyers trailed 1-0, dating to Nov. 29 when they last visited the Islanders and won 5-1. Philadelphia is 5-4-3-2 in those 14 games.

"You guys are making a big issue out of that," Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock said. "The issue is when the game is on the line. We're tied 1-1 in Atlanta, and made a mistake. We're up 2-1 here tonight, and we made a couple of mistakes. That's the focal point."

Philadelphia tied it at 2:46 of the third period during a power play.

With Shawn Bates in the penalty box for slashing, Handzus picked up the rebound of John LeClair's shot just outside the crease and backhanded the puck into the open net at 2:46.

The Flyers, who won the first three meetings between the teams this season, took a 2-1 lead at 9:48 when Snow was unsure of how to play a loose puck in front of the crease. He dived and missed, and Recchi swooped in and put a shot in.

"Just when you thought one team had the game under control, the play would swing back," Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. "Then a few minutes later, it would go back the other way."

Asham tied it 2-2 at 11:44 when he got a cross-ice pass at the left post and scored. On the goal, Islanders forward Alexei Yashin -- who drew the second assist -- skated off the ice with a lacerated right forearm. He was cut by the skate of Handzus when they were locked up in front of the net.

"I saw him in the trainer's room," Asham said of Yashin. "It's pretty gruesome."

The goal wasn't all that pretty to Hitchcock.

"We're up 2-1 with 12 minutes gone in the period," he said. "We didn't give them a sniff; we didn't give them a shot on goal. But their first chance was a doozy. We lost a faceoff and lost three checks. It's one thing if kids are out there, but we put out our experienced players. It's disappointing to work so hard and have that happen."

Asham made it 4-2 with an empty-net goal with 20.2 seconds left.

Scatchard said an inspirational win a week ago helped the Islanders realize that they could win, even when trailing in the third period. New York was behind Stanley Cup champion New Jersey 2-0 and 3-1 but rallied to win 5-4.

"When you can come back on the Devils, you can come back on anybody," Scatchard said.
