COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - If only the Columbus Blue Jackets could play the New York Islanders more often.

David Vyborny used a wrist shot to score the only goal in the shootout and lifted the Blue Jackets to a 4-3 win over the Islanders on Thursday night.

"I knew I was going to shoot, Vyborny said. "I know him (goaltender Rick DiPietro) from the world championships. I just tried high glove and it went in. It was good to get the win. Two points is very good for us."

Columbus, which entered the game with the second fewest points in the league, improved to 6-0-1 against the Islanders since entering the NHL in 2000. This was the only scheduled meeting between the clubs, who play in opposing conferences.

The Islanders' Mark Parrish scored the tying goal, his ninth of the season, with 37 seconds left in regulation. He slid in a loose puck from close range with New York on a 6-on-4 skating advantage after DiPietro was pulled.

"We were lucky to get a point, but we'll take it," Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. "It certainly soothes a little bit after a game we could have won if we were prepared to play."

Sergei Fedorov scored his first goal with the Blue Jackets and Nikolai Zherdev and Adam Foote also scored for Columbus, which had a season-high three power-play tallies - two coming early.

"I feel that if we can play like we played in the first period when we're not in fear of making mistakes, that's when we are dominant," Foote said. "If we can play that way for the whole three periods we are going to win a lot of hockey games."

Jan Hrdina added two assists, his first points in 16 games, to help Columbus snap a five-game, home-losing streak.

"The guys came out with a lot of energy" Blue Jackets coach Gerard Gallant said of his team that played its first game in a week. "The power play looked the best its looked all year. They scored some pretty goals. It was a fun game to watch."

Mike York, who has six points in two games, and Trent Hunter also scored for the Islanders. New York had its five-game winning streak on the road snapped in falling to 2-2 in shootouts.

"York and Hunter might have been the only line cooking," Stirling said. "I thought they were really good. After that I'd be hard pressed."

Columbus, which entered with the NHL's worst power play, took a 2-0 lead within the first 8:05.

Zherdev, curling to the goal from the left circle, converted a give-and-go with Hrdina and scored with a low shot from the slot to make it 1-0 at 2:06 for his fifth of the season.

Foote extended the lead during a two-man advantage by ripping a pass from Brian Berard from the left point past a screened DiPietro.

"The guys were crisp," Gallant said. "We played a great first period."

Early in the second period, York jammed home a loose puck from just outside the crease with the Islanders on a power play to make it 2-1.

With the Blue Jackets on another power play, DiPietro robbed rookie Geoff Platt's attempt from the slot with a diving glove deflection. Fedorov, acquired in a Nov. 15 trade with Anaheim, chipped the rebound over the sprawled goaltender from just outside the crease at 16:52.

"My arms were going up," Fedorov said. "I thought that was a goal already by Geoff Platt. The puck just came out, all of a sudden I had a pretty tough angle but I was able to put the puck in."

New York responded just over a minute later to make it 3-2 on Hunter's slap shot from the left circle.

Columbus has won three of four and is 3-0 in shootouts this season.

Notes: Fedorov was honored before the game for playing in his 1,000th NHL game on Nov. 30 at Minnesota. ... Foote played his first game for the Blue Jackets since being named captain on Tuesday. ... Columbus C Manny Malhotra injured a shoulder during a second-period fight with Kevin Colley and will be out indefinitely. ... DiPietro finished with 24 saves. ... Hunter's goal was his first in nine games.
