UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Islanders have plenty of trouble protecting one-goal leads at home. They were fortunate to have a shootout to rescue them against the Edmonton Oilers.

Alexei Yashin and Trent Hunter scored in a shootout and the Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak at home by beating the Oilers 3-2 on Saturday night.

``We'll take the two points any way we can,'' Islanders coach Steve Stirling said. ``We played a good 45 minutes. It seemed in the first period we couldn't or wouldn't skate with them.''

Hunter won it on the final shot of the shootout after Rick DiPietro stopped Edmonton's Ryan Smyth.

``I was definitely a little nervous,'' Hunter said. ``But once I got the puck and started going, my natural instincts took over.''

Oilers goalie Jussi Markkanen said earning a point was good, but the Oilers could've stolen two.

``It never feels good to lose,'' Markkanen said. ``We got a point, and it might be a big point in our season, but it still doesn't feel good.''

Hunter and Arron Asham scored power-play goals in regulation for New York. DiPietro made 26 saves.

Fernando Pisani and Chris Pronger scored for the Oilers, 7-2-2 in their last 11 games. Markkanen stopped 22 shots. It was Edmonton's first shootout loss of the season, and Ales Hemsky scored the only shootout goal for the Oilers in the second round.

Pronger tied it with 64 seconds left in regulation on Edmonton's eighth power play. He was left alone in the slot, took a pass from Hemsky, and wristed a shot past DiPietro. The Oilers still had more power-play time but couldn't net the winner.

Hunter scored earlier in the period to give New York a 2-1 lead. Parked in the slot, Hunter got a piece of defenseman Chris Campoli's toss at the net, redirecting the puck by Markkanen.

Edmonton dominated the first period, and took a 1-0 lead at 13:31. Pisani's shot from the lower right circle hit DiPietro and went in.

DiPietro faced seven shots before the goal and made consecutive fine stops on Hemsky and Smyth.

In the second period, Markkanen robbed Jason Blake by making a glove save on his wrist shot that appeared to be ticketed toward an open net at 15:35. Just 14 seconds later, Asham got a piece of Brad Lukowich's center point shot for the tying goal.

Asham's fifth of the season, came on New York's fourth power play. It came while former Islanders captain Michael Peca was serving a slashing penalty. It was Peca's first game against New York since being traded to Edmonton during the offseason.

``I wasn't nervous at all,'' Peca said. ``I just wanted to go out and have fun with it.''

Special teams were prominent. Edmonton was 1-9 on the power play, while the Islanders were 2-7.

``Aside from our special teams, we played pretty well,'' Pronger said. ``That's been the story of our season so far.''

Notes: Edmonton have lost four straight games on Long Island. The Oilers' last road win over the Islanders was Dec. 14, 1999. ... Peca, who played three seasons for the Islanders before he was traded for Mike York, received a nice ovation from the crowd of 12,249 after the first stoppage of play. ``It was nice,'' Peca said. ``It really wasn't necessary, but it was nice. That's an indication of what kind of man (Islanders owner) Charles (Wang) is and what kind of organization they are.'' ... New York is 6-5-1 at home, and has been outscored 44-38 there.
