Bruins skate past Islanders at the Coliseum

Chris Campoli
The Boston Bruins built a 3-0 lead, and eventually defeated the Islanders 3-1, Monday night at the Nassau Coliseum.

Tim Thomas made 33 saves to record his tenth win of the season, while Glen Murray, Petteri Nokelainen and Chuck Kobasew each scored in separate periods for the Bruins. Chris Campoli scored the Islanders' lone goal, late in the third period on the power play. Rick DiPietro stopped 19 shots in the losing effort.

When asked what has been wrong with the offense, head coach Ted Nolan replied: "A lot. We just have to work harder. There has to be a better effort. We're just okay. But that doesn't cut it. We have to be hungrier and more determined. We had our chances, but when the goaltender sees the puck, he's going to make the saves. We're all frustrated, but this is a good group of guys. Hopefully we can fight through it."

Boston scored on 2 of 6 power play opportunities, while the Islanders went 1 for 6 on the man-advantage.

"You just have to stay with it," said captain Bill Guerin. "The good thing is we're not out of it. Everyone has to get better and start producing. We all know how to play in this league and score goals, it's just a matter of fine tuning it and bearing down. With the start that we had, we're no secret anymore. We play hard, but teams are ready for us."

The Bruins grabbed a 1-0 lead on the power play when Murray lofted a shot past the glove of DiPietro with 6:57 left in the first period.

Late in the second period, Andy Sutton's clearing attempt was fanned on and grabbed by Nokelainen, who then roofed a shot over DiPietro on a mini-breakaway.

With 3:25 left in the third period, Kobasew scored from point-blank range off a feed from Peter Schaeffer.

The Islanders scored their only goal late in the third period on a power play point shot from Chris Campoli.

The Islanders next play against Tampa Bay on the road this Wednesday. The players' fathers will join them for the four-game road trip.

"Perhaps the road is just what we need," said Nolan. "We'll get a chance to spend some more time together, eat together and get closer."
