Philadelphia Flyers 5, New York Islanders 3

Hartnell nets hat trick and adds an assist in come-from-behind victory

A sold out Nassau Coliseum crowd of 16,234 saw the Islanders relinquish a 3-1 lead in the second period and fall 5-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers, Saturday night at the Nassau Coliseum. Scott Hartnell scored a hat trick and added an assist to help the Flyers complete their comeback.

"I didn't think we were playing that well with the lead," said head coach Ted Nolan. "Towards the end of the first period things started to turn in their favor. The forwards were cheating a bit and skating too far ahead of the defense when we were breaking out. We didn't play the way we're capable of playing. We just didn't play a smart game."

After allowing three goals in the first period, Martin Biron, who stopped 28 shots, didn't allow a goal the rest of the way. Philadelphia scored three power play goals on six opportunities. The Islanders went 1-of-5 with the man-advantage.

"This was just the case of us trying to sit on a lead," said captain Bill Guerin. "We made some bad decisions. The game comes down to turnovers and penalties. We let them come back and take it from us."

Philadelphia and the Islanders were tied heading into the third period, but Hartnell and Mike Richards scored to pull the Flyers ahead. Rick DiPietro made 26 saves.

"We work as a team and play defense as a team," said Ted. "It's not just our defense that needs to help out. Our forwards have to help out and we didn't help out."

Hartnell scored at 5:21 of the first period to opening the scoring for Philadelphia.

Only 22 seconds later, Richard Park countered to even the score at one. DiPietro left the puck off for Bryan Berard, who threw a home run pass up to Park. The speedy winger busted in the offensive zone and beat Martin Biron over the glove side for his eighth goal of the season.

The Islanders struck again with 9:25 to play in the opening period. Miroslav Satan and Josef Vasicek broke in 2-on-1 against Biron. Satan fed Vasicek for a perfect pass and an Islanders 2-1 lead.

Bill Guerin made it 3-1 Islanders in the first with a late power play goal. Bruno Gervais' shot rebounded right to Guerin, who made no mistake.

The Flyers cut the lead to 3-2 on Scott Downie's tally at 5:04 of the second period. And then with 7:00 remaining in the second period, Hartnell tipped home his second of the game, while on the power play.

In the third period, Hartnell scored just 54 seconds into the frame and Richards added a goal on a wrist shot with under 8:00 to play.
