Ducks 1, Islanders 0
New York Islanders 0, Anaheim Ducks 1

After holding the Ducks scoreless in the first two periods, Ducks center Saku Koivu’s goal at 3:40 of the third period gave Anaheim all it would need in the team’s 1-0 win. It is their fifth straight victory.

“I keep telling the guys we’re going in the right direction,” said Islanders head coach Scott Gordon. “We just can’t score right now. We had 27 shots on net, we had another 34 that were either blocked or missed the net and sometimes that’s an indicator that you’re trying to be too fine.”

While it took the Ducks 18:13 to get their first shot on goal, Wednesday night’s 1-0 loss is the Isles eighth straight. Although, the game at the Honda Center closed with the tightest goal margin in there last eight as the Islanders fell 1-0. The Islanders have not led a game at any point in the last eight games and are now 0-8-2 when letting up the first goal.

After successfully killing off one penalty and recording seven shots on net, the first period closed without a score despite the Islanders two power play opportunities.
“The defensive effort we’ve had the last two games has been great,” said Gordon. “Eventually the offensive side is going to change for us as long as we can continue to show the effort that we had tonight.”

The Islanders best opportunity of the game came at 4:35 of the second period when Michael Grabner fed the puck to Matt Moulson. After passing the puck behind the net, Moulson positioned himself in front of Ducks goaltender Curtis McElhinney. Working through traffic, Moulson took a shot which James Wisniewski then went in for the rebound knocking the puck past McElhinney, although he knocked it in with a high stick and the referees waved it off.

Facing two more power plays in the second period, the Islanders came up empty on both. Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek (who has played 404 NHL games) took the only Islanders penalties that period as he took a penalty for cross checking and entered into his first career NHL fight at 11:34 with Ducks center Ryan Carter.

In the final period, the Islanders drew two more penalties but finished the night 0-for-6 on the power play.

“Yeah, I mean, we let the team down on the power play,” Wisniewski said. “I had like seven scoring chances. (As a team) we had plenty of scoring chances. We had two-on-ones, we missed passes, breakouts, breakaways… I really have nothing else to say, it’s a bad streak. It’s frustrating.”

Islanders tough guy Zenon Konopka took a 10 minute misconduct penalty as well as a game misconduct after arguing with Koivu and the referees because he thought the Ducks should have been called for a delay of game penalty, which could have been a game changing power play at 15:49 of the final period.

McElhinney made 27 saves on the night for Anaheim while Dwayne Roloson stopped 13 of 14 shots. The last time the Islanders held their opponent to one shot (on the road) in the first period was October 10, 2002 in Buffalo.

Moulson recorded six shots on net, the most on the Islanders roster. Defensemen Mike Mottau and Wisniewksi each had three. Josh Bailey was second star of the game.
