The New York Rangers scored five unanswered goals taking down the Islanders 7-2 at Madison Square Garden on Monday Night. Matt Gilroy’s first of two goals just 44 seconds off the opening faceoff set the tone early.

“There are not a whole lot of positives to take out of this (loss),” Islanders interim head coach Jack Capuano said. “I’m sure there are guys in the room that understand that the battle level wasn’t where it needed to be tonight.”

Through 60 minutes, the Islanders were outshot 52 to 20. Despite the loss and the number of goals scored, Dwayne Roloson held the Islanders in it through two periods and finished with 45 saves.

“(Roloson) has been good for us,” Capuano said. “It was tough for him. There were probably one or two that he’d like to have back, but overall he’s been good for us over the last week.”

His effort wasn’t enough to help the Islanders who looked slow through the majority of the game, but Capuano said the Islanders still had their chances. Rob Schremp and PA Parenteau each scored in the first period to take a 2-1 lead, but the momentum was never maintained.

“I think it’s in the first period, we had an opportunity to bury a team,” Islanders forward Zenon Konopka said. “They didn’t play well in the first and we played just as bad. I think if we were ready to play it would have been a different story. We had a lot of problems in our own end with confusion, man coverage and there was a little bit of too many people trying to do other people’s jobs and no communication.”

Capuano agreed, “Bailey had a great opportunity there in front of the net, Tavares had a great opportunity and Jack Hillen came down the slot. I mean we could have turned the game around, we just couldn’t seem to get any momentum.”

Martin Gaborik tied the score at two when he scored a power play goal with a slap shot at 19:09 of the first. Then in the second period, the Rangers outshot the Islanders 18 to four, for a two-period total of 36 to 16. Gilroy scored his second of the game and the go-ahead goal at 12:08, then Brian Boyle scored to take a 4-2 lead at 18:21.

Dubinsky scored at 4:14 of the third period to bring the score to 5-2 as he lifted the puck top shelf. Goals by Ruslan Fedontenko and Derek Stepan, sealed the Rangers to a 7-2 win.

Wednesday night, the Islanders will take on the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nassau Coliseum.

If they want a chance at winning, Capuano said, “You have to go to practice tomorrow, you have to watch a little video and you have to get back to the basics. Guys have to look in the mirror and we just have to battle a little bit harder. We made it a little easy on them tonight. We were too casual in certain areas of our game and we’re not going to be successful that way.”

But Konopka couldn’t have said it better.

“It’s a home game and we don’t have time for losing streaks at this point in the season,” he said.
