Bruins 6, Islanders 3
New York Islanders 3, Boston Bruins 6

Islanders defenseman Dylan Reese scored two goals in the first period and the Islanders took a 3-2 lead into the third, but Boston fought back with a four-goal third to earn a 6-3 win on Friday night at TD Garden.

Despite the somewhat lopsided final, Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano was encouraged by the team’s first 40 minutes, which included a 2-0 lead after one period.

“I thought we got away from our game in the second half,” said Capuano. “The territorial battle at the start was ours, but then they started protecting the red line, getting pucks behind our ‘D’ and we turned the puck over.”

Filled with young prospects who were looking to make names for themselves, the Islanders roster had the the 2011 Stanley Cup champions on their heels early in the contest.

“When you come into a building like this, with some of the size of their forwards and some of the guys they dressed, it was a good learning experience and a good test for some of our young defensemen,” said Capuano.  “Overall I was pleased with a lot of guys.”

Goaltender Rick DiPietro stopped 20-of-22 shots faced in two periods of action, before watching the final frame from the bench.

“That first game’s always good to get under your belt,” said DiPietro. “Overall, I think we played well. The first period was our best period – It’s definitely something we can build on.”

Reese drew first blood just 1:08 into the game; Jeremy Colliton forced a turnover behind the Bruins net and dished to Reese for a one-time blast from high slot. The Islanders doubled their lead at 18:18, when a Justin DiBenedetto pass sent Reese streaking down the right wing. Reese beat Bruins goalie Tim Thomas with another a sharp-angle slap shot.

The Islanders escaped the first frame up 2-0, despite being out-shot 11-6, but Boston scored two goals in 1:04 during the middle frame. David Krejci put the Bruins on the board at 8:17 and Patrice Bergeron made it 2-2 at 9:21, finishing off a pretty wrap-around feed from Milan Lucic.

With time winding down in the middle period, Trevor Frischmon put the Islanders back on top, finishing a 2-on-1 rush by shoving home a rebound from Tomas Marcinko

Anders Nillson replaced DiPietro in goal to start the third period, and Dennis Seidenberg tied the game at 4:11. Brad Marchand’s goal with 11:43 remaining gave Boston its first lead of the game, and the Bruins added a pair of insurance markers from Johnny Boychuk and Rich Peverley at 15:14 and 15:00, respectively.

The Islanders return to preseason action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Nassau Coliseum, when they faceoff against the New Jersey Devils at 7 p.m.

Notes:
Jeremy Colliton left the game in the first period with a groin injury.
