The New York Islanders winless streak reaches six games as the team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Winnipeg Jets at Nassau Coliseum Thursday night.

The Islanders fell behind early after the team couldn’t clear the puck from a scramble in front of the net. Evander Kane fished it out and pulled it around Rick DiPietro to score his fifth goal of the season. It was also the second straight game the opposition has scored on their first shot and the third in 10 that the Islanders have been shut out.

“It’s obviously a very frustrating loss for us in our own building,” defenseman Travis Hamonic said. “We threw a lot of pucks on net, Pavelec played really good, but at the end of the day we have to find a way to win that game.”

Five minutes after his goal, Kane was awarded a penalty shot after being hooked by Hamonic on a partial breakaway. Going one on one with DiPietro, Kane rung a shot off of the left post keeping the game 1-0.

At the end of the first period, Kane and Hamonic dropped the gloves in what was part of an intense battle between the two all game.

“I preach that you fight for a few reasons, trying to spark the team is one of the main ones and I found a willing combatant in Evander Kane,” Hamonic said. “He’s a tough kid. I think he wanted to go as well so I just tried to do it for those reasons.”

The Isles nearly caught a break when Nik Antropov threw the puck onto an unsuspecting Ondrej Pavelec. On the ensuing Jets drive, Johnny Oduya bounced a cross-crease pass off of Andrew MacDonald resulting in the Jets second goal late in the third period. It was another night of bad bounces for the Isles, who saw their best chances of the game fall victim to hopping pucks.

“It’s hard to break down a game like that, when you play well enough to win,” Steve Staios said. “We have to be mature enough that is if there is one goal, or if they get two goals, we can’t get down, get rattled, we have to find our resilience as well.”

The Islanders outshot the Jets 34-25. Blocked shots noticeably hurt Jim Slater, Nik Antropov and Randy Jones, all of which would stay in the game.

Apart from the penalty shot, the Islanders played a disciplined game, sending no players to the box. They would go 0 for 3 on powerplay.

The Islanders have a quick turnaround, with the Washington Capitals in town on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. The attendance was 10,157.
