The Islanders trailed by one goal headed in to the third period but dropped a 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Monday night. Tyler Seguin scored what would be the game winner at 14:07 of the first.

“They had more zone time than us because we didn’t execute our breakout,” Islanders Head Coach Jack Capuano said. “We were lazy going back for pucks, all five guys, and we had no execution of breaking the puck out of our own end. What happens is, they’re in your end, you get tired and they had some good, constant motion in the offensive zone and they had some chances… (We didn’t do) enough to beat a team like that.”

The Islanders first game of a three-game road trip, began with a tic-tac-toe scoring play by the Bruins. With a breakdown in the Isles defensive zone, winger Beniot Pouliot put the puck passed Evgeni Nabokov at 1:32. Matt Moulson evened the score at 5:52 as he redirected Steve Staios’ shot from the point through the slot to go high glove side on goaltender Tuukka Rask.

Nabokov then gave up a rebound off a Zdeno Chara shot from the point, which Nathan Horton capitalized on the carom for his first point of the night at 13:38, a goal on the power play.

Twenty nine seconds later, Tyler Seguin scored from below the circle to Nabokov’s left as he converts on a pass through the crease from Patrice Bergeron. With the Bruins third goal in under 15 minutes of play, Capuano sent Al Montoya in to relive Nabokov who was playing in his first game after a lower body injury he sustained on Oct. 27th in Pittsburgh.

“We have to bring it every night for 60 minutes, shift by shift and save by save,” Montoya said. “These are unbelievable teams, the defending Stanley Cup Champs getting back on a roll at home, so we have to be ready. They brought their game, we have to match that level.”

Michael Grabner closed the gap 3-2 as he backhanded and knocked the puck out of the air on the blue line down to John Tavares, who skated with the puck through the slot before sending the puck back to Grabner for a top shelf goal at 18:36.

Montoya stood on his head making some significant saves to keep the second period scoreless.

Early in the third period, Staios’ shot accidentally hit Daniel Paille square in the face, injuring the Bruins forward. Boston rallied behind their injured teammate, scoring a set of goals in 49 seconds; Milan Lucic scored at 4:34, Horton got his second of the night at 5:23.

“You can’t give up two quick ones like that,” Brian Rolston said. “It’s 3-2, if we play solid we’re going to get back into the game, but we gave up a couple of mistakes and that line (Lucic-Krejci- Horton) is going to make you pay.”

David Krejci capped it off with an empty net goal at 17:12.
