PA Parenteau’s first career multi-goal game and an Evgeni Nabokov shutout powered the New York Islanders to a 3-0 victory over the Washington Capitals Tuesday night at Verizon Center.

Parenteau scored two goals and Nabokov made 17 saves as the Islanders won convincingly, taking the second half of back-to-back games.

“After last night’s game, it was good to come back out and have a good effort here tonight,” Jack Capuano said.

The shutout was Nabokov’s first as an Islander and his 51st career clean sheet. He faced 17 shots and saw a lot of quality chances including an Alex Ovechkin drive through the slot in the third period. Nabokov was square to puck and preserved the Islanders lead.

“Guys like that are going to get their opportunities,” Travis Hamonic said. “When they had those opportunities Nabby played each situation perfectly and he’s really kicking it now in net for us.”

The Islanders power play was effective Tuesday, going 2-for-6 and cashing in on their first opportunity. Mark Streit wound up and found John Tavares at the side of the net, putting a slap-pass off his stick and passed Tomas Vokoun. Tavares’s 17th goal extends his point streak to 10 games (6g/11a), the longest of his career and good enough for second longest in the NHL this season.

Parenteau’s two goals give him nine on the season and 39 points. In the second period, Parenteau took a feed from Frans Nielsen and immediately released a low wrist shot by the glove of Vokoun. Normally a pass-first player, Parenteau parked himself at the side of the net to tap in a cross-crease dish from Matt Moulson to ice the game on a late third-period power play.

“I think we were sharp from start to finish tonight,” Parenteau said. “We didn’t give them many looks, we played a really strong game defensively and that’s where it starts. We got our chances on offense and they took some penalties on us and we capitalized.”

While the power play was clicking, so was the Islanders penalty kill and defensive play. The team killed off all three penalties and blocked 18 shots, one more than the Capitals managed to put on net.

After two games in two days, the Islanders get a day off before a Thursday night date with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Isles look to solve their Philadelphia quagmire at the Wells Fargo Center at 7 p.m.
