The New York Islanders will finish February without back-to-back wins after falling 5-2 to the Ottawa Senators Sunday evening at Scotiabank Place.

The Islanders took the lead 49 seconds in to the game, but the Senators gathered momentum as the game progressed outscoring the Isles 5-1 in the final 59 minutes.

“We played a really good first road period,” Travis Hamonic said. “The game was lost in the second period. It’s frustrating trying to play catch up in the rest of the game. When you have to play catch up like that, it’s unfortunate.”

John Tavares opened the scoring finishing a 2-on-1 with PA Parenteau and beating  Robin Lehner five-hole. The one goal lead held up until 12:21 of the second period, when Milan Michalek scored a power play marker putting Ottawa on the board.

Four minutes later on the power play, Jason Spezza notched his 28th of the season, and 601st  point of his career.  The Isles gave up two power play goals for the second straight game.

“It’s four power play goals against in the last two games,” Jack Capuano said. “That’s an issue right now. It’s something that we really have to take a look at. We aren’t the highest scoring team in the league so our PK has to be good.”

In the third period Jim O’Brien took advantage of a Mike Mottau’s failed pass to Frans Nielsen deep in the Islanders zone, snapping a shot off the glove of Evgeni Nabokov and extending the Sens lead to two goals.

“In the second period it turned for them,” Tavares said. “That gave them a little more confidence and they didn’t have to take as many chances. If we had buried some chances, especially early in the game, it would have put them in a bit of a hole and really have to fight back.”

Parenteau pulled the Islanders to within one at 9:04 of the third after he corralled a bouncing puck and put it short side on Lehner. Parenteau’s 15th of the season was his third in the last two games and his 10th point (4g/6a) in his last eight games.

The Isles caught a bad break as Mark Streit’s broken stick led to a Senators rush, resulting in a redirection by Chris Neil to put Ottawa up 4-2. Kyle Turris put the game out of reach with an empty-netter in the dying minutes of the game.

Hamonic assisted on both Islanders goals, giving him two points in his first two games back from a broken nose. Defensive points leader Erik Karlsson assisted on the first two Senators goals and has six goals and 11 assists on a seven-game point streak. Nabokov stopped 19 of 23 shots and Lehner turned aside 28 of 30.
The Islanders next stop on their four-game road tip is Washington as they take on the Capitals Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
