Kevin Poulin kept the Islanders alive with 30 saves and Michael Grabner scored the overtime winner to beat the Colorado Avalanche 2-1 Friday night at Pepsi Center.

Grabner’s winner came 1:46 into the extra frame, as the Islanders overcame a third-period deficit to extend the Islanders' road winning streak to six games.

On the winning goal, Grabner initially couldn’t coral a bouncing puck on a breakaway, but stuck with the play, curled the puck into the slot and beat Semyon Varlamov with a wrist shot from the hash marks.

"I ran into the ref and fumbled the puck," Grabner said. "Fortunately I got it back. The guys opened up room by driving to the net and I got a chance to shoot from the hash marks."

The win would not have been possible without stellar goaltending from Poulin, who was sharp all night, reacting to bang-bang plays down low, deflections and one-timers. With the score tied 1-1 in the third period, Poulin saved the game, denying Cody McLeod with the right pad on a clear breakaway.

"That was a key save that I had to make," Poulin said. "I felt pretty good today. Especially when you play a lot, you read the plays a little better and give out fewer rebounds. You read the game better."

Nathan MacKinnon broke a scoreless deadlock with a breakaway goal late in the second period. The top pick in the 2013 draft picked up the puck at the Avalanche blue line and used his speed to create the one-on-one chance with Poulin.

The Islanders headed into the second intermission trailing by one, but adjusted to the altitude and found their legs in the third period. Brock Nelson put the Islanders on the board with his fifth goal of the season, burying a deflected Frans Nielsen pass. The puck luck was created by Nelson, who took a hit in the high slot, but made a play and kept the puck in the Avs zone.

"It’s a good road win for us," Nelson said. "Poulin played solid behind us and that was the biggest thing for us. We stuck with the game plan, got pucks in and were able to find a way to win."

The three-game winning streak matches the Islanders' longest streak this season and was also their sixth victory in seven tries. The Islanders gave up the first goal in five of the six wins, but showed resiliency in each comeback.

"If we get scored on we just keep playing our game and it’s been working," Grabner said.

The Islanders continue their six-game road trip Sunday evening in Dallas. Puck drop from American Airlines Center is at 6 p.m. eastern time.

NOTES: Thomas Vanek (10 games) and John Tavares (seven games) had their point streaks come to an end Friday… The Islanders power play went 0-for-2 after going 4-for-6 in their last two games… Travis Hamonic led the Islanders with 26:58 TOI… Grabner had a team-high five shots… Andrew MacDonald had five blocks.
